Sonoma Valley Hospital Offers New Technology That Uses The Body’s Own Fat To Help Heal Orthopedic Conditions

February 14, 2019

Sonoma Valley Hospital is among the first hospitals in the North Bay Area to offer Lipogems, an advanced adipose tissue technology that provides patients suffering from an orthopedic condition or injury with the means to support the healing process through a simple and quick procedure using the beneficial properties of their own fat tissue.

Adipose tissue, commonly known as fat, has many natural reparative characteristics that help to promote healing throughout the body. Your own fat is ideal because it has the highest concentration of reparative cells and the highest quality tissue, and minimizes the risk of rejection.

The Lipogems device is used to gently process and use your own body’s fat to cushion and support injured or damaged areas as your body heals itself. It is recommended for patients with an orthopedic condition unable to get major surgery, or those who would like another option to invasive surgery. It can also be used in conjunction with surgery to support healing.

Lipogems treatment, which is FDA cleared for use in orthopedic and arthroscopic surgery, is being offered at Sonoma Valley Hospital by Michael Brown, M.D. an orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Brown notes that this minimally invasive procedure can be performed in less than an hour on an outpatient basis. It involves making a tiny puncture in the skin at midsection to collect a small amount of fat, processing collected fat in a sterile saline solution to wash away any impurities, then injecting the Lipogems-treated tissue into the treatment site.

“Lipogems provides a natural alternative for many patients, including those who don’t qualify for major surgery or are looking for treatment alternatives before surgery. It can also be helpful for those who wish to improve the body’s healing capabilities when surgery is needed,” said Dr. Brown.
