Sonoma Valley Hospital Partners With UCSF Health’s Urology Program to Deliver Local Access to Nationally Recognized Specialist

November 10, 2020

Sonoma Valley Hospital has announced that it has expanded its relationship with UCSF Health to provide urology consultations via telehealth for referred patients beginning this month.

UCSF’s nationally-recognized Urology specialist, Peter Carroll, MD, MPH, is part of UCSF’s Urology Telehealth Program   Through the expanded partnership, Dr. Carroll will provide prostate cancer specialty care and other urologic services to the Sonoma County community through outpatient telehealth consultations. Telehealth patients will also have the convenience of completing their follow-up diagnostic testing (labs and imaging) at Sonoma Valley Hospital (SVH). Information about Dr. Carroll and his services is available at the SVH website, sonomavalleyhospital.org. LINK

Access to UCSF Health expertise through telehealth services has been a part of the SVH-UCSF relationship since the affiliation began in 2018, beginning with services for neurology and infectious disease.

Telehealth medicine has increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic began and is being used more often by primary care providers and specialists. Telehealth visits reduce travel time for patients in Sonoma Valley who otherwise might have needed to drive up to several hours for an office visit in San Francisco. With easier access to respected specialists such as Dr. Carroll, the expanding relationship between SVH and UCSF Health continues to bring new opportunities for high quality patient care in Sonoma Valley and Sonoma County.

About Peter Carroll, MD, MPH: Dr. Peter Carroll is Professor of Urology and holds the Ken and Donna Derr-Chevron and Taube Family Distinguished Professorships at UCSF. He is a member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and an expert in managing urologic cancers.

In research, Dr. Carroll’s areas of interest include innovative methods of urinary tract reconstruction, refinement of robotic prostatectomy, and development of biomarkers that predict cancer aggressiveness, the use of active surveillance rather than immediate treatment of prostate cancer and how cancer detection and treatment impact quality of life. He has received many honors and awards, published more than 600 articles on cancer detection and treatment and is principal investigator or co-investigator of many peer-reviewed research grants.

Dr. Carroll graduated with honors from Georgetown University School of Medicine and came to UCSF for general surgery training and a residency in urology. He completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before returning to UCSF. He received his MPH from the University of California at Berkeley.
